Jane

Hunter College High School, Sophomore
Violin

Hi there !  My name is Jane Robinson, and I am a rising junior attending Hunter College High School.

I first picked up the violin at age four and have since met countless teachers, mentors, peers, and young musicians who have shaped me to be the violinist I am today.

More about me

Here are some pictures that quickly summarize things I love:

i. Chamber music (me on the far left)

[that's from when I performed at Lincoln Center this year !]

ii. Books

iii. Working in the big Bryant Park Library

"I am" Statement

One of the many projects that I did with Midori & Friends

was the "I am" statement, a stream of consciousness of self-identity where all lines began with the phrase "I am".

I am Jane Mitsuko Kobayashi Robinson

I am Jane Robinson

I am 小林光子

I am a bit tired of human interaction

I am bummed out that I wasn't able to meet my counselor today

I am delighted that we got pastries today

I am a bit worried that I don't know how to talk to my upperclassmen

I am hoping I got the extra credit right on the math test

I am overly conscious of my Spotify activity

I am looking forward to dinner: Mom's homemade Bolognese

A picture of a time I don’t remember

An aunt whose name I confused for the first many years of my life

A shawl which makes her look like a fairy

The gingham of her favorite dress

Post stamps of our letters together

A picture of a time I’ll always remember

"Who I Am" Poem

Marcus Amaker attended one of our Midori & Friends meetings and helped us write poetry, with the theme "Who I Am vs. How I Am Seen". Poetry writing has always been difficult for me because there are seemingly endless possibilities, but because we were given specific guidelines on how to go about the activity, I found that poetry can be a lot more enjoyable than I had previously given it credit for.

Is it for the best ?

that the world doesn't see me when I'm crestfallen

when the building blocks are falling apart and all control is slipping through my fingers ?

that instead what it sees, or sometimes still overlooks

is the eyebags, the unwashed hair, the cynical joke that lingers ?

look away, I'm begging you

no, acknowledge me, if it's the last thing you do

even if there's never a right way for you to

look me in the eye, take me as I am

make me believe it is always for the best

when I show you the fractured parts of me

the rest of the world doesn't see

Advocacy Statement

Through my platform as a Midori & Friends member and as a violinist of 12 years, I am advocating for a program that brings together youth musicians of all levels to play chamber music together and provides them with a professional musician for guidance in addition to performance opportunities so that they may improve as performers as well.
